"The Austrian education sector would be one of the largest growth markets."

"books&docs 421.", started up in 2013, merges analogue and digital computing specially in the classical publishing world. It produces learning materials that are tailor-made to the very specific needs of their users.

Economy spoke to company founder Rene Heinzl from the development of printing machines to PDFs, about teachers nowadays and modern class books till to children’s different learning styles and new growth markets in Austria.

Rene Heinzl, managing director of "books&docs 421.". Old classical analogue market. Printing machine versus new digital worlds.
It started in 2013 at the request of an international industrial company about how to combine modern digital printing with other digital technologies.
Research in Europe has showed surprisingly only a few products on the market which achieve a symbiosis between digital infrastructure interface such as platforms or web shops and traditional printers. So, how to introduce digital concepts into traditional production and industry.

Which company or branch areas apply to these starting points?
The heart of our company was born in this interface between publishers and printing works. People no longer want to have large quantities of vintage products; we want to have our own individual products.
Whether we are looking at the educational sector, at schools or the private provision, we need to be able to find ourselves in our product.
For example ‘my muesli’, they have managed to sell a really outstanding product in the form of muesli you can put together yourself through their website. The digital world allows us to provide a single client with an individualised product that matches their particular needs.
Our operative start was between Austria-Book-Publishers, the biggest school book publishers in Austria and the printing house Morawa, which was involved in this digital printing concept at the time.

How can you describe this business case more clearly?
Take a look at our first product: our lesson and appointment planner. 100,000 Austrian teachers are now in a position to organise their timetable for a whole school year in their own individual way.
At the same time it can also be used as a class register, there is much more space for entering information and, moreover, they can configure it ahead of time by using a web platform.
Table one shows a very personalised printing product for one individual person. It costs no more than an ordinary product, for example a personal organiser.

Personalised and on the subject of content a very individual using.
We view the development of the educational sector as one of the most powerful factors, currently focussing specifically on migration, where I can make customised learning materials available to users.
This doesn’t apply just to the educational sector. We have also developed products for creating a customised cookbook, for instance.
It depends not a market sector; it's about the demand for personalising a product for a customer and making it more unique to them.

Are there other possibilities for this kind of thing, for example in the healthcare sector?
We have already run a research project with the FH-Campus College in Vienna. Our task was to document the whole educational path within the life sciences sector.
We still don't have sensitive data in that case; however we have already noticed how sensitive the subject of data information is. Data storage, for instance. Our products make that possible. The question is how long it will take.

A further theme for "books&docs 421." involves digitally supported further education and personal learning environments.
Particularly in the school text book arena, Austria has a difficult system due to the long drawn-out time-frame for creating school books.
It takes up to five years before a school text book is available in bookshops and schools. Five years are equivalent to between seven and ten iPhone generations and that's how long it takes before we write a new school book.

... is the iPhone a better school book?
In this case, we are considering a combination of digital and analogue school books. Brain research in America tells us that haptic learning makes it easier to remember things because our brain is able to store them in a different way.
The educational sector is probably one of the fields where published works have the longest shelf-life and are put to the greatest use.
On the other hand, you need to take far greater account of learning styles. We know that children have up to five or seven different learning styles.

How can we take them into account?
That would actually be a really big theme in Austria and enable us to focus education much more on the individual. If not in primary school, then later on in high school.
The teacher can choose products or chapters to construct a class learning scheme. If some students need a different learning channel, a CD, a YouTube video, or a different way of explaining something… That would all be possible.

... what does it take to upgrade Austria?
It probably just needs a little push, not trying to change the whole school book process, but by presenting something such as a afternoon session in a totally new way.
In terms of the educational sector, new, digitally manufactured products, printed and delivered as analogue, could represent an huge growth market for us.

What are the next plans for "books&docs 421."?
We are not actively seeking investors. We have already succeeded in garnering interest. Our company can be financed from cash-flow funds, which means that start up financing is not required.
But, now there‘s the question of a strategic or financial investor. We would prefer a strategic investor, if that should be necessary. In any case, we need to get more employees.

A strategic investor means someone who will be present only for a specific period of time.
Currently, we have decided that right now and over the next few years, we will offer several products on the end-client market. Up till now, we have been working in the Business-To-Business area but from now on we want to establish ourselves with our products.
We see a lot of potential in the educational sector. If the publishers aren't doing it, then we have to do it, by cooperating with them as we go. Somebody has to do it, to give it a go.
